Specimen Book: Optima featuring Roman Architecture and Romeo and Juliet
A 20-page type specimen book for Optima. This type specimen is a booklet that demonstrates the range of a typeface, applied to headlines and text in a variety of sizes. This booklet also explores the strong character, history, and cultural background of Optima.
An association of the Optima typeface with its history. Using the aesthetic qualities of the Renaissance movement and Roman architecture that Herman Zapf based the font on and the aesthetic quality and history of Renaissance architecture in Rome and the literary narrative of Romeo and Juliet which was set in the Renaissance to structure the book. The graphic elements are based on columns, inscriptions, and domes of monuments. The typeface is associated with the tragedy Romeo and Juliet, by William Shakespeare, because of its Italian Renaissance influence. The story takes place during the Italian Renaissance in Verona, a city Zapf took inspiration from during his travels when developing Optima.
